Sam

Sam
  • Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
  • ISBN: 978-0708915615

Sam is about the loneliness of a small boy evacuated to Yorkshire during the Blitz, missing his mother. It is about postwar London, where his Mum lets him ride the Tube and buy tickets to dreamland at the local cinema. It is about the solitude of boarding school, running away from there and the despair that takes him back to his mother’s side.

As immediate and intense as the films of which its small hero is so fond, this novel plunges the reader into the heart of Sam’s experience. It unfolds, without a word of adult exposition, the moving chronicle of a child’s desire, and the strategies he develops to deal with both the absence, and the complicated presence, of the people he loves.
